What Is AI Visibility and Why Does It Matter for Your Business?

AI visibility measures how often and how prominently your business appears when someone asks an AI tool a question about your service or area. It is separate from your Google search ranking, and right now, most businesses are invisible in AI search without knowing it.

Here is what is happening: when someone searches “best Google Ads consultant in Victoria BC” or “local SEO help near me,” tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity generate a direct answer, and cite specific businesses or pages as their sources. If your business is not cited, you get zero visibility for that query, even if you rank on page one of Google.

This guide shows you exactly how to find out where you stand, what is holding you back, and what to fix first.

How to Use This Guide With Your Chosen AI Tool to Get Accurate Results

This is where it gets useful fast. Instead of working through the guide on your own, you can upload both the PDF guide and the Google Sheet workbook directly into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, and let the AI act as your analyst. It will read the guide, understand the scoring system, look at your workbook, and help you fill it in accurately, interpret what the results mean, and tell you what to work on first.

Here is exactly how to do it:

1
Download both files
Save the 41-page guide PDF and make a copy of the Google Sheet (download it as Excel if your AI tool does not accept Google Sheets links).
2
Upload both to your AI tool
In ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Claude, or Gemini, start a new conversation and attach the PDF and the spreadsheet file. Both tools can read and work with them at the same time.
3
Give it your starting prompt
Try this: “I have uploaded the AI Visibility Guide and the audit workbook. I want to run an AI visibility audit for my business, [your business name], a [your service] in [your city]. Walk me through the audit step by step, help me score each platform correctly, and tell me what to prioritise when we’re done.”
4
Run the platform checks together
The AI will prompt you to test each platform, Google, Perplexity, ChatGPT Browse, Gemini. You run each check, report back what you found, and the AI helps you score it accurately in the workbook using the guide’s rubric. No guessing.
5
Get your action plan
Once all platforms are scored, ask: “Based on my scores and the guide’s action plan framework, what are my top three Tier 1 Quick Wins?” The AI will reference both the workbook data and the guide’s recommendations to give you a prioritised, specific answer, not generic advice.
Tip: Do the platform checks in incognito mode first (Cmd+Shift+N on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows). This removes personalisation so you see results the way a new visitor would. Then bring those results back to your AI conversation for accurate scoring.
Why this works: The guide has the rubric. The workbook has the structure. Your AI tool has the ability to read both and apply them to your specific situation. Together, they do the analytical work that would normally take hours of cross-referencing, and they help you score things accurately instead of guessing at what counts as a 1 versus a 2.

🤖 How to Check Your AI Visibility Right Now

Use the copy-paste prompts below in any AI tool to instantly check whether your business appears in AI-generated answers. Record your results in the audit sheet.

ChatGPT (chatgpt.com)

Paste this prompt into a new chat (use GPT-4o for best results):

Who are the best [your service, e.g. Google Ads consultants] in [your city]? List specific businesses and explain why you recommend them.

✅ Your business named? Note the exact wording used. ❌ Not mentioned? Add to your audit sheet as a gap.

Claude (claude.ai)

Paste this into a new conversation:

I'm looking for a reputable [your service] in [your city]. Can you recommend specific local businesses and explain what makes each one trustworthy?

✅ Look for your business name, website URL, or your name being mentioned.

Perplexity (perplexity.ai)

Search this query and check the Sources panel on the right:

Best [your service] in [your city], who should I hire and why?

✅ Is your website in the sources list? That means Perplexity is reading your site. ❌ Not there? Your content needs more authority signals.

Google AI Overviews (google.com)

Search Google in an incognito window (so personalisation doesn't skew results):

[your service] [your city], how do I choose the right one?

✅ See an AI Overview box at the top? Check if your site is cited. AI Overviews pull from pages with strong FAQPage schema and E-E-A-T signals.

Kimi (kimi.com)

Paste into Kimi Search (enable web search mode):

Recommend a [your service] in [your city]. Which local businesses have the best reputation and results?

✅ Kimi indexes the web in real time. Look for your business name or domain in the response.

Manus (manus.im)

Give Manus an agentic research task:

Research the top [your service] businesses in [your city]. Visit their websites, check their reviews, and give me a comparison table with your recommendation.

✅ Manus actually browses your site. If your site is slow or thin on content, it will be skipped. Check if you appear in its comparison.

📋 Record Your Results

For each AI tool, note in your audit sheet:

  • Mentioned? Yes / No / Partially
  • How described? Copy the exact words used
  • Cited as source? (Perplexity and Google AIO)
  • Competitor named instead? Note who

Repeat this test monthly. AI visibility changes as your content, schema, and authority signals improve.

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring your website content so that AI-powered search platforms like Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini, choose your page as a source when generating an answer to a user query.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked in a list of results. GEO gets you cited inside the answer itself. A page that ranks third but is cited in the Google AI Overview often captures more user attention than the top organic result below it, because most people read the AI summary first and click the cited source directly.

The signals overlap with traditional SEO, authority, content quality, and technical health matter in both, but GEO adds a layer of structure and expertise signalling that most pages do not yet have.

GEO-Optimised Approach
✓ Lead with a direct answer to the question in the first paragraph
✓ Use H2/H3 headings that match the exact questions people ask
✓ Include FAQ schema markup so AI can read your Q&As as structured data
✓ Add an author bio with real credentials, photo, and LinkedIn link
✓ Update key pages at least quarterly with a visible last-updated date
Traditional SEO Approach
✗ Opens with a vague welcome paragraph before getting to the point
✗ Optimises keyword density and meta descriptions for ranking position
✗ Focuses on backlink volume as the primary authority signal
✗ Content attributed to “Admin” or no author listed at all
✗ Published years ago with no updates and no visible date

The 7 GEO Best Practices That Improve AI Citation Rates

Section 9 of the guide covers these in full detail. Apply these to your three highest-traffic pages first.

1
Answer the question in the first paragraph. AI engines pull the most direct answer available. Lead with the answer, then explain it.
2
Use clear question-and-answer structure throughout the page. Format content using H2/H3 headings that match what users actually type. Include an FAQ section at the bottom with schema markup.
3
Include original data, statistics, or case studies. AI platforms heavily favour content that provides data others do not have. Even a small client result makes your content more citable than generic advice.
4
Show real expertise through author signals. Add an author bio with verifiable credentials, LinkedIn profile, certifications, years of experience. Include the author’s name in the page’s schema markup.
5
Add and validate schema markup. At minimum, add FAQ schema to every key page. For local businesses, add LocalBusiness schema. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test before doing other GEO work.
6
Keep content current. Update high-priority pages at least quarterly. A page last updated two years ago is far less likely to be cited than one updated last month.
7
Build internal linking structure. Link from supporting blog content to your main service pages. A service page linked from 12 blog posts sends a stronger authority signal than one with no internal links.

How the AI Visibility Score Works

Each page in the audit gets a score out of 8, two points per AI platform. You score 0 if your page is not cited, 1 if it is cited as a secondary source, and 2 if it is a primary citation. The four platforms: Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT (Browse mode), and Google Gemini. When you feed both the guide and the workbook to your AI tool, it applies this rubric for you, so the scores are consistent and accurate every time.

0–2
Poor
Minimal or no AI citation. Start with Tier 1 Quick Wins.
3–4
Fair
Some presence. Significant gaps on key platforms remain.
5–6
Good
Solid AI visibility. Refine content and citation strategy.
7–8
Excellent
Consistently cited. Maintain freshness and authority signals.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Visibility

We rank number one on Google. Why aren’t we showing up in AI Overviews?

Organic ranking position and AI citation are separate signals. AI platforms pull from content that best answers the question. A page in position eight with clear FAQ schema and a direct answer can outperform a number one page with no schema and a vague introduction. Content structure and schema come first.

How long does it take to see results after making GEO improvements?

Perplexity can pick up new content within hours to days. Google AI Overviews typically update within one to four weeks after Google recrawls the page. Plan for four to six weeks after implementing changes before running a full re-audit.

Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?

No. AI citations are based on content quality, authority signals, and relevance, not paid placement. Google Ads appear separately in search results and do not influence AI Overview content.

My competitor is cited everywhere and I’m not. What are they doing differently?

Check three things: their schema markup using Google’s Rich Results Test, their content structure (do they answer questions directly with an FAQ section?), and their Google Business Profile completeness. The difference usually comes down to FAQ schema, content directness, and GBP strength, all fixable.

Should I optimise for all four AI platforms or just Google?

Start with Google AI Overviews, they affect the most search volume. Perplexity is the second priority. The GEO best practices in this guide improve visibility across all four platforms at the same time, so you are not doing separate work per platform.
