Nonprofit Rebranding: A Canadian Youth Orchestra Needed a Big Change
The Orchestra is an established institution in Vancouver that was approaching its 90th year milestone when it engaged Mairin Deery on its nonprofit rebranding project. As a longstanding leader in children’s extracurricular musical education with recognition Canada-wide for excellence, the organization needed to completely overhaul its brand and web presence to maintain its forward-thinking reputation. The organization required a complex back-end architecture to serve various user groups, including individual orchestras, sessional instructors, conductors, and students while alleviating administrative pressure on staff.
As a graphic designer and nonprofit branding specialist, Mairin Deery worked with them to complete their identity overhaul, and brings that breadth of expertise to Seymour Digital Media. The project began with deep immersion into their culture, including meetings with key staff and students, attending performances, and evaluating past materials alongside international colleagues in youth music. We researched colour theory and typography with professional musicians to ensure resonance within classical music culture. The collaborative design process balanced professionalism with vibrancy, creating a palette students could relate to while maintaining polish. Working with a web developer, we developed long-term website functionality that could automate administrative tasks and created comprehensive print material guidelines to translate the new visual identity across all touchpoints authentically. Mairin has since refreshed their brand for their 90th and 95th year celebrations and continues to be a strong collaborative partner.

The Orchestra continues to lead children’s musical education in Canada with an elevated brand that positions them as a forward-thinking organization. The new visual identity successfully launched their 90th anniversary campaign and continues to support their 95th year initiatives. Most significantly, the online tools and infrastructure have alleviated huge administrative loads from the organization, allowing prospective and current students, instructors, and conductors to audition, communicate, and log work seamlessly and cost-efficiently while maintaining their reputation for excellence.
